What is the Australian Association of Angel Investors  Ltd? 
The AAAI is the not for profit national industry association representing Australian business angels networks, individual business angel investors and organisations that support the growth of business angel investment in Australia.

AAAI was incorporated in 2007 with the mission to:

  • Promote ethical and efficient angel investment and angel syndication in Australia.
  • Promote the growth of angel investment in Australia, including encouraging and informing the establishment of new angel groups.
  • Define best practice for angel investor members in an Australian context.
  • Disseminate information on and access to formally recognised syndication models.
  • Be a source and channel for information and education of angel investors and entrepreneurs seeking angel investment.
  • Represent the interests of angel investor members in Australia as a peak body in dialogues with governments, peers and industry.
  • Act as a channel for information and opinion from members to form the basis of advice to Government.
  • Assist with, and direct, research into Australian angel investment activities.
  • Organise and hold an annual summit conference on topics relevant to members.

Australian Angel Networks
Some of the more prominent business angel networks are:

  • Australian Business Angels (Strategon) -  based in Adelaide operating nationwide and formed in 1995 it has over 650 angels on its database and now averages 2 investments per month.
  • Angels Institute – based on the Gold Coast and formed in 2006 to educate angel investors and form a support network to assist in the formation of member angel networks such as Apollo 13.  
  • Apollo 13 – based on the Gold Coast and formed in 2006 with 18 members and has made 3 investments in agbio, manufacturing and services.
  • AusFirst Angels – based upon the Sunshine Coast it has a large database of several thousand investor members and has made 10 investments across a range of industry sectors including manufacturing.
  • BioAngels – 20 members with part time CEO formed in 2003 and has made 6 investments in bioscience companies.
  • Brisbane Angels - has 50 business angels plus 20 gatekeepers. Established in 2006 members have made 4 investments in seed and early stage ICT, manufacturing and cleantech.
  • BSI (Business Strategies International) – based in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane and established in 1991 it has over 700 angels on its database and its pitching forums have raised over $30M over the last 2 years.
  • Capital Angels – based in Canberra and established in 2005 its 20 members have made 5 investments in ICT
  • Enterprise Angels – based in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne and established in 2000 it has over 700 angels on its database.
  • Founders Forum – based on the Gold Coast and Brisbane and established in 2000 its monthly pitching forums have helped companies raise over $40M
  • South Australian Angels – based in Adelaide and established in 2007 it has 20 members who will target non-bioscience companies.
  • Victoria's Investment Partnersbased in Melbourne and formed in 2007 it has 12 members drawn from metropolitan and regional Victoria.

New Zealand Angel Networks

  • ICE Angels - based in Auckland with 80 members who have made 11 investments totaling NZ$9m.
  • Angel HQ - based in Wellington and was established in 2007.
  • UPSTART Angels - based in Dunedin with 90 members and has made 3 investments.
  • Powerhouse Ventures - based in Christchurch and has made 1 investment.
